Relief for Seniors.
According to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the proportion of the population aged 65 years and over is projected to increase from 12.4% in 2000 to 19.6% in 2030. Allston-Brighton is home to many senior citizens, and they deserve the opportunity to participate in community life and to live with dignity and security.
Assist owners to modify, restore and repair existing seniors' residential properties.
Increase the available stock of barrier-free housing.
Create a program for clearing snow from sidewalks for eligible seniors and people with disabilities.
Create an outreach program to educate seniors about telephone and other types of fraud.
Implement community programs that encourage neighbors to watch out for seniors.
Review traffic crossing lights, particularly in areas where many seniors reside. There must be sufficient time to safely cross streets, clearly marked crosswalks, and enforcement at these.
Improve street signs (e.g., oversized signage) in areas where many seniors reside.
Increase opportunities for seniors to take part and advocate in city government.
Encourage seniors to share their knowledge and experience, and volunteer in their communities.
Seniors are a valuable resource and we need them to continue to serve as leaders, mentors, volunteers and active members of our community.
